Carl Markert has joined NuScale Power, LLC, as Director of Plant Operations.

In his new assignment, Carl is responsible for defining operations related design requirements and procedure strategy for the operation of nuclear power plants using NuScale’s modular, scalable Small Modular Reactor technology.

Carl joins NuScale from LES, Urenco USA, in New Mexico where he was the Plant Engineering Manager and the Operations Manager. At LES, Carl focused on the engineering processes, programs, functions, and personnel to ensure that the uranium enrichment facility’s operations and configuration was maintained in accordance with the design and licensing basis. Prior to that, he managed plant operations to ensure the safe and efficient production of enriched uranium.

With over 25 years in the nuclear industry, Carl’s extensive experience includes operations, maintenance, and engineering at the Cooper Nuclear Station in Nebraska, and as a consultant in the engineering and maintenance areas to several nuclear plants. In addition, Carl is a veteran of the United States nuclear navy.

Carl is a graduate of Texas A&M University; he holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering and a MBA from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M.

About NuScale Power, LLC

NuScale Power is designing a nuclear steam supply system and nuclear power plant that offers the benefits of nuclear power but takes away the issues presented by installing large capacity. The NuScale design is for a modular, scalable Light Water Reactor (LWR) nuclear power plant system. A nuclear power plant using NuScale’s technology is comprised of individual NSSS modules. Each produces 45 megawatts with its own combined containment vessel and reactor system, and its own designated turbine-generator set. A power plant can include as many as 12 NuScale integral PWR modules to produce as much as 540 megawatts. NuScale power plants are scalable – additional modules are added as customer demand for electricity increases. These multi-module plants are highly reliable – one unit can be taken out of service for refueling or maintenance, or a new unit added, without affecting the operation of the others.
