Tom Mundy, NuScale Power’s Executive Vice President for Program Development, today addressed the World Nuclear Association (WNA) annual Symposium in London, the nuclear industry’s foremost international event.
Speaking in a session about public acceptance of nuclear power, he discussed whether a new generation of small modular reactors (SMRs) could make a positive difference to how people perceived the industry.
As a potentially valuable, adaptable addition to the energy mix, Mr. Mundy described how small factory-fabricated reactors such as the NuScale Power Module could offer clean, secure power in a greater range of locations but with a lesser impact on local populations.
He noted that modules could be installed in multiples depending on need, to provide heat in industrial settings or as baseload on the grid in locations not suited to large scale nuclear development. Mr. Mundy also highlighted the integral safety features of the NuScale SMR design which present a shift from the conventional safety mechanisms in existing nuclear power plant designs.
